Mae Johnson Allen

Mrs. Mae Johnson Allen, 93, a resident of Gadsden and formerly of Brantley, died Sun., Feb. 8, 2015.

Graveside services were held Wed., Feb. 11, 2015, at Brantley Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Daniel officiating and Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.  Mrs. Allen was a resident of Brantley and longtime member of Brantley United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Robert, owned and operated the former Allen’s 5 & 10 for many years in Brantley.

Mrs. Allen is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hill Allen; her parents, Ashton Ford Johnson, Sr. and Willie Mae Folsom Johnson Maddux; a sister, Louise Johnson Dunaway; and two brothers, Ashton Ford Johnson, Jr. and Tommy Maddux.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Allen (Bill) Tomik and Eve Allen; two grandsons, Robert William (Amy) Tomik and Johnathan Allen Tomik; a great-granddaughter, Gracie Mae Tomik; three sisters-in-law, Myrtle Johnson, Myrtis Maddux, and Zada Farr; several nieces and nephews: and special friends, David and Abbi Amyx. Grandsons and nephews served as active pallbearers.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to her friends and caregivers at Gadsden Health and Rehab Center and Lawley Hospice in Gadsden.

 

Kate Welch Bolling

Mrs. Kate Welch Bolling, 93, a resident of Rutledge, died Fri., Feb. 6, 2015.

Funeral services were held on Tues., Feb. 10, 2015, at Turner Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Yancey and Jim Boothe officiating.

Interment followed in Siloam Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mrs. Bolling was preceded in death by her husband, Harley O. Bolling; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Welch; three sisters, Jewel Chesser, VonCyle Bass and Myrtle Lee; and her brother, Leon Welch.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Danny Hall; two grandchildren, Dena (Thomas) Mitchell and Clint (Cristy) Hall; four great-grandchildren, Kasey Hall, Harley Hall, Bret Mitchell and Rachel Mitchell.

Active pallbearers were Harley Hall, Bret Mitchell, Clint Hall, Pete Waller, Dusty Jordan and Jason Holladay.

Jeanette Rhodes Horn

Mrs. Jeanette Rhodes Horn, 74, a resident of Luverne died Fri., Feb. 6, 2015.

Funeral services were held Mon., Feb. 9, 2015, at the Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. W.O. Sanders and the Rev. William Leverette officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Goshen, with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. Horn was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Horn; her parents, Jack and Evelyn Turner Rhodes; a sister, Judie Rayborn; and a brother, Royce Rhodes.

Survivors include five children, Barbara (Jimmy) Free, Jeff Schofield, Mary Horn (Jeff ), James Horn and Dusty Horn; three grandchildren, Charlsi Sport, Chase Free and Tori Free; one great-grandson, Brayden Free; a sister, Debbie ( Larry) Lester; a brother, Kenneth (Debbie) Rhodes; and a sister-in-law, Sue Rhodes.

Active pallbearers were David Lester, Jason Lester, Brian Rayborn, Jim Tranum, Chris Rhodes and Kyle Rhodes.

 

Dewey Lee Smith

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Dewey Lee Smith, 85, a resident of Fairdale, Ky. and Glenwood, died Mon., Feb. 9, 2015, after a brief illness.

Services for Col. Smith will be held in Fairdale and will be scheduled at a later date.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Elaine Hall Smith; five children, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Dewey L. Smith, Jr., Sandra Lee Smith, Vicki Boyd, Joshua Russell (Samlong) Smith, and Jonathan Ross (April) Smith; seven grandchildren, Mike Boyd, Halle Smith, Mahalia Smith, Kaden Smith, Kellan Smith, Samara Smith and Serena Smith; sister, Mildred Davis; and many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Dewey.
