Andy Brown, 33, has been named publisher of The Demopolis Times, Demopolis The Magazine, and their affiliated publications.

Brown, a graduate of Troy University, has served as managing editor of Greenville Newspapers, LLC and The Greenville Advocate since April of 2011. The Greenville Advocate and The Demopolis Times are both affiliated with Boone Newspapers, Inc., of Tuscaloosa.

“I’m honored and excited to have the opportunity to go to Demopolis and build on the good work that the staff there has been doing,” Brown said. “At the same time, it’s bittersweet. Greenville is my hometown, and will always be a special place to me no matter where Jennifer and I call home. I grew up reading The Greenville Advocate and it’s been a great experience to be a part of the staff here. The Advocate has a proud tradition of being one of the best small weekly newspapers in the state, and I’m confident that’s not going to change anytime soon given the wealth of talent the staff here has.”

During Brown’s tenure with the Advocate, the newspaper won General Excellence in the 2014 Alabama Press Association Better Newspaper Contest and General Web Excellence in the 2012 contest. The Advocate finished in the top three in the General Excellence category each of the past three years. From 2012 to 2014, the Advocate won 73 APA awards.

“Anyone that knows Andy knows that he is dedicated to community journalism,” said Greenville Advocate publisher Tracy Salter. “Andy has earned this opportunity, and I am thrilled for him as he moves forward in his new role at The Demopolis Times. He will be greatly missed at the Advocate and in the community.”

Prior to his time in Greenville, Brown spent two years serving as a missionary with The Navigators in Almaty, Kazakhstan. During that time he served as the field staff administrator and taught Intensive English at the Kazakh Economic University.

Before moving to Kazakhstan, Brown worked as a sports reporter for The Eufaula Tribune from 2007 to 2009, during which time he won five Alabama Press Association Better Newspaper Contest awards and helped the Tribune to back-to-back second-place finishes for “Best Sports Section” in 2008 and 2009.
After graduating from Troy, he served two stints as the sports editor at The Troy Messenger, an affiliated newspaper of The Demopolis Times.

Brown has served as public relations chairman and a member of the board of directors for the Rotary Club of Greenville.

He is married to the former Jennifer Nolen, a Eufaula native and graduate of Troy University.
