Andrew Stabler, a sophomore at Fort Dale Academy, has been accepted to the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science in Mobile.

The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, the state’s only fully public residential high school for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, is founded on a rigorous math and science curriculum with emphasis on responsible leadership.

ASMS enrolls 275 students each year and was ranked by Newsweek magazine as a top 10 public high school in Alabama and as a top high school in the nation.  Since 1993, ASMS has graduated more than 1,600 students, more than 400 of whom have earned post-graduate degrees.  Admission requirements are evaluated in three areas: academic achievement, maturity, and leadership in school community and religious organizations.

Stabler attended a preview day at ASMS this year and immediately knew that the school was the right place for him.

“Having an opportunity to visit the campus and meet so many people that love to learn was inspiring,” said Stabler.  “The teachers at ASMS love to teach, the students love to learn.  It’s a very mutual relationship that everyone has at ASMS. Everyone is there to succeed.”

Stabler has been a student at Fort Dale Academy since he was in K-3 and has been a part of the football team since the seventh grade.

“I’ll miss some of my close friends and some of my teachers, but in reality, I’ve been ready for this opportunity for a while,” said Stabler.  “I’m looking for a challenge and an advanced curriculum.”

Stabler said his parents are extremely supportive in allowing him to attend ASMS and believe it will open doors for his future.

“I will live on school campus during the week and can come home on weekends and holidays,” he said.

Stabler’s favorite subject is Sociology.

“I like working with people and helping people as much as possible,” he said.  “English is a close favorite because I love to write,”

Stabler said one of the teachers that has helped him most throughout his time at Fort Dale Academy is Susan Foster.

“Mrs. Foster works to push students to be responsible, develop good work ethics and study habits,” said Stabler.  “The way she teaches makes math enjoyable.  I think she has helped me be a better student.”

Stabler currently maintains a 4.0 GPA.

Stabler is not sure where he will attend college, but said he plans to pursue a degree in psychology.

“I look forward to making the most out of my opportunity at ASMS,” he said.  “When you’ve got the desire to succeed it will take you places.  Having a mindset for success is like a wildfire, it spreads until it makes an impact.”

Stabler will start his junior year at ASMS in August.

Stabler is the son of Betty and Chris Stabler of Fort Deposit.
