Georgiana School sophomore guard Jacquez Payton was named to the Alabama Sportswriters Association all-state basketball team on Sunday.

The Georgiana standout earned honorable mention honors.

“It’s a huge honor to be nominated as one of the best players in the state, especially as a sophomore,” said Georgiana head coach Kirk Norris. “I am proud of Jacquez for the season he had and he is very deserving of the honor. It’s also a testament to his teammates and the way they play together as a team, even though he received the honor.”

Payton averaged 20 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists during his sophomore campaign in helping lead the Panthers to an 18-11 record.

He scored 20 or more points in 19 of the 27 games he played in, including 41 in the season opener against J.U. Blacksher, and was named MVP of the Straughn Christmas Tournament and to the Georgiana Thanksgiving Class and Class 1A, Area 3 all-tournament teams.
