Carolyn Boyd Herndon

Carolyn Boyd Herndon, age 85, loving mother and friend, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 18, at her home in Greenville. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 20, from 5-7 p.m. at Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Greenville, 212 Fort Dale Road, with Rev. Johnny Padalino and Rev. Jerry Wilkerson officiating with Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home directing. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery.

Miss Carolyn was born to Byron P. and Orma R. Boyd in Graves County, Kentucky and grew up in the town of Sedalia.  She attended Howard College (now Samford University) and received her BS from Troy University.  While living in Montgomery, she served as Secretary of the Board of Directors of Montgomery Baptist Hospital for 17 years. She served as school secretary at Trinity Presbyterian School before moving to Greenville where she and her husband, Don D. Herndon, owned and operated Dunklin-Herndon Funeral Home.

Carolyn was passionate about her family, her friends and her church. She spent her life serving her two home churches, Normandale Baptist Church in Montgomery and First Baptist in Greenville, through the Women’s Missionary Union, Girls Auxiliary, and as a Sunday School teacher. Until recently, she taught the Ruth Sunday School Class at First Baptist in Greenville.  She loved her friends and interacted with them through the Tuesday afternoon bridge club in Montgomery for 55 years, as well as with her bridge friends in Greenville, her Alpha Delta Pi Alumni Association, and the Pride of Greenville Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don D. Herndon, Jr; parents, Byron P. and Orma R. Boyd of Sedalia, Ky.; and her brother, Byron P. Boyd, Jr. of Cadiz, Ky.  Survivors include her children, Jan (Freddy) Gurr, of Atlanta, Ga.; William B. (April) Farrar, of Greenville; Thomas B. (Karen) Farrar, of Troy; and Marie Farrar (Mitch) Baldree, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; stepdaughter Donna Herndon, of Birmingham; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several special cousins, nephews and a special life-long family friend, Frank J. Smyser.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Thomas Farrar, Will Farrar, Daniel Farrar, Bruce Baldree, Christopher Farrar, Allen Vinson, great-grandson Christian Mergler and Walter Parmer.  Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Coghlan, Stephen Boyd and John B. Boyd.
