The Class AAA, Region 2 basketball tournament has been postponed due to the possibility of unsafe travel conditions for the teams and their fans.

A winter storm that hit the area on Tuesday has made many roadways unsafe to travel.

The tournament, which was scheduled to begin Thursday at Fort Dale, will now begin on Friday. Games will be played Friday, Saturday and Monday.

“Because of weather conditions in Greenville, as well as weather conditions and school closings in the Birmingham area (that affect Bessemer and Kingwood), we have decided to (postpone) the Region 2 tournament,” said Fort Dale Academy head coach Reggie Mantooth.

Friday’s games will begin at 1 p.m. with Escambia facing off with Bessemer in girls action.

Fort Dale’s girls and boys received a first-round bye and will not play Friday. The Lady Eagles will play at 4 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the Tuscaloosa/Monroe game. The Eagles will play the winner of the Kingwood/Monroe game at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Saturday’s games will also begin at 1 p.m. and Monday’s games will begin at 3 p.m.
