Mr. Robert James Gholston, 95, a native of Bullock County, Ala., died Monday, March 18, 2013 in Mobile, Ala. He was a resident of Sandy Ridge, Ala., and was a veteran of World War II where he received several honors including the Bronze Star. The family will receive friends at Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Thursday with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery. In lieu of Flowers, Donations may be made to the Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church; 4203 W. Hickory Grove Rd., Letohatchee, AL 36047 Rev. Gayle Woodard will be officiating with Dunklin and Daniels Funeral Home Directing.

Gholston lived in Montgomery, Ala., for many years and was employed by the state Conservation Department. He was an active member of the Montgomery Lions Club until his death and served as president and district governor.

Upon retiring he moved to Sandy Ridge, Ala., and was an active member of the Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church. He served on numerous committees and taught Sunday school.

He was active in community affairs and was instrumental in starting a volunteer fire department. He was a member of the Lowndes County Cattleman’s Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert James Gholston; his wife, Lois Gholston; two brothers, Joe C. Gholston from Fitzpatrick and Warren W. Gholston from Montgomery.

He is survived by two sisters, Ethel Gholston and Alma Galloway (Thomas) of Mobile, Ala.; sister-in-law, Helen Gholston of Auburn, Ala.; five nephews, Van C. Gholston, William G. Gholston, DVM, Thomas M. Galloway, Jr., Robert M. Galloway, Joseph W. Galloway, M.D., and great nieces and nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers will be Thomas M. Galloway, Jr., Robert M. Galloway, Joseph W. Galloway, MD, Van C. Gholston, William G. Gholston, DVM, Thomas M. Galloway, III, Joseph W. Galloway, Jr. and Michael A. Galloway.
