Georgiana School head coach Kirk Norris almost couldn’t believe his eyes.

Sixteen minutes into Tuesday night’s contest with Highland Home High School, the Panthers had allowed just two points.

“We obviously played pretty good defense,” Norris said.

Georgiana went on to win the game 58-19 in its home finale.

“It’s always good to win for the seniors on senior night,” Norris said. “I was proud of those guys and the way they played.”

The Panthers were led by senior forward Justin Oikle.

Oikle scored 11 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the win. In the teams’ previous matchup Oikle also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Fellow senior Cameron Matthews scored 11 points in the win.

Freshman Jacquez Payton also scored 11 points for Georgiana.

Norris admits he was a little surprised at how one-sided the contest was.

“The first game it was a five or six point game at halftime and it was pretty close heading into the fourth period, so I thought it would have been a closer game, but our guys came out ready to play and really did a good job executing,” he said. “We’ve been having a period in every game where we kind of quit playing, and we didn’t have that against Highland Home. That was good to see, and it allowed us to play some guys that don’t get to play as much, which is always a good thing.”

The Panthers will be back in action Friday when they take on Brantley High School in the first round of the Class 1A, Area 3 tournament. The game will be played at 5:30 p.m. at J.F. Shields High School in Beatrice.
