Dear Editor,

I was deeply saddened by the passing of Amanda Phillips. I have had the honor and privilege of working with and watching Amanda give her all to the Greenville YMCA.

Our YMCA is such a special place and that is directly related to her guidance over the years.

In recent years, the Greenville YMCA has experienced significant growth, both with new and improved facilities, as well as with enhanced services to its members and the community.

Under Amanda’s watchful eye, the following has occurred:

• She coordinated the volunteer effort that led to the acquisition and renovation of the Greenville Academy campus and property for the current YMCA facilities. Through the support of Senator Shelby and our local elected officials, the impressive pool facility was completed and today provides a location where children in our local community can learn to swim.

• When the Greenville YMCA rejoined the Montgomery YMCA, Amanda oversaw the significant enhancement of our fitness facilities, including the addition of updated exercise equipment and the enhancement of exercise programs. Just recently, the walking trail around and through Watermelon Hill was completed and is now available for public use.

In the near future, construction of the City of Greenville tennis facility will be completed on the YMCA campus.

As with life, the activities at the Greenville YMCA will continue in Amanda’s absence.

Gratitude is owed to Amanda for making the Greenville YMCA what it is today – a place where everyone in our community, whether they are young or old, rich or poor, or of any gender, race or national origin, can come together for fun and recreation. With all the negative distractions facing us in the world today, the Greenville YMCA represents what is good and right. Thank you Amanda Phillips for that.

Very Truly Yours,
Warren C. Matthews
